Through the lens of Chinese photographer Luo Yang we are permitted an intimate glimpse into the lives of an emerging Chinese youth, at a moment when the role of women is evolving and changing. In a blend of portraiture, staged photography and snapshots Yang conjures up a poignant vision in which her subjects are encouraged to explore an authentic self. Being brought up in a social landscape of repressed individuality and artistic freedom Yang’s girls refuse to be defined by classic stereotypes and notions of what it means to be female. Yet, these evocative images illuminate the simultaneous independence and vulnerability that characterises the transition from girl to woman. The Girls series was started by Yang in 2007 and is a continuing project.
