This series shot by Bex Day for Twin Magazine is based on naturists in a fashion / documentary setting. Inspired by feeling limitless and comfortable nude, I was keen to explore the realms of England’s nudist beaches. I was inspired by the factors that naturism addresses and challenges including the ego, vanity, personal space, human sexuality, objectification and exploitation to name a few. Styled by Sara Gilmour and modelled by Kerrie Addy, as well as our main protagonists Sharon Smithers and Richard Worrall, the photographs were shot in Brighton on the nudist beach over there in August. Besides immense gusts of winds, the beach was fairly deserted so we were able to shoot freely.
The series considers naturism as a cultural and political movement. Naturism takes various forms of being practiced: individually, within a family, socially or in public; this series attempted to include all of these realms at one time within the narrative of the imagery. Kerrie is pictured as in her own family with her parents being nudists and her learning more about it throughout the shoot and coming to terms with it and then finally joining in in her journey of self acceptance.
